The God of Mediocrity

When we prepare ourselves to go on job interviews we make sure we look nice. We practice questions that may be asked or research before applying. The point is we put our best foot forward. We try our best to show the interviewer that we really want the job. I had applied for jobs in the past that seemed to come up miraculously, from people who only met me once but remembered me years later enough to recommend me for a really good job. All those jobs seemed to not work out, the door closed on them for one reason or another. As I was talking to someone about how odd it seemed that all those offers didn’t go through, but the last job I applied to seemed to work out, they told me I probably didn’t show I wanted it enough.

I knew this was a lie, because I’m an overachiever who has applied for jobs and went on externships or job shadowing in my field since I was a freshman. However, this made me think about our walk with God. Do we show Him that we want Him? Do we show Him that we actually truly want to go to heaven? Do we show Him we want to serve Him? We put our best foot forward when it comes to an interview, but what does God get from us?

“God paid a high price for you, so don’t be enslaved by the world.”

1 Corinthians 7:23 (NLT)

God deserves to get what He paid for! He paid a high price! What He gave so that our relationship with Him might be reconciled was not chump change, that’s for sure. So, are you excited? Are you filled with unexplainable desire to glory Him with all that you have? Sometimes in our walk with God we might lose a bit of the flame and the spark that used to be there. We allow ourselves to crawl into a mundane and mediocre lifestyle for God, where we just go to work/school during the week and go to church on Sundays or Saturdays. We smother the light God gave us in hopes that no one else sees it #ninjachristianity . We don’t feed the flames that God has placed within us by getting into His word, which leads us to be even more mediocre than before.

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice–the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.”

Romans 12:1 (NLT)

Cain and Esau both learned the hard way that it’s not good to half heartedly put effort into giving offerings to God. Cain’s sacrifice was not as pleasing to God as his brothers, so God honored his brother over him, which caused him to fall into his own temptation. Esau was so arrogant in thinking that just because he was the first born that he already had the blessing of the first born from his father. It was his birth right, wasn’t it? Yet still Jacob got one over on him because he and his mother wanted it more for him than Esau seemed to care.

It’s clear as day from scripture that God does not expect mediocrity from us! He doesn’t want a half-hearted sacrifice! He expects us to give our whole life to Him. Not just parts. Not just almost all of it, but saving a small little oasis for yourself. No, God wants everything that we have and sometimes giving stuff up will hurt. Sometimes giving stuff up can make you question what your identity is. Sometimes giving stuff up can make you unsure and frightened about where your headed. Sometimes giving stuff up will make you outright uncomfortable. Sometimes all those things are exactly where God needs you, to make your mediocre life into one of excellence that’s pleasing to Him. So, stop serving your mediocre ‘god’, the god of mediocrity, and start serving the true God: the God of Excellence! Give God your best. Give Him all that He deserves, which is excellence, and nothing short of that.

Be blessed all God’s people! And know that even if your excellence may not be on the same level as another person’s, God still honors and loves you for putting your best foot forward.
