Just this week, I was having a conversation with my boss about eating at Subway. He chuckled a bit and told me that he could probably guess the top three subs that I would like eating. Unfortunately, each time he guessed one, I cringed and then laughed at what he said. There was no WAY that I would order anything remotely close to what he was guessing. Those subs not only didn’t suit my tastes, but they also did not suit what I needed to maintain the body I had been given to take care of.
I then smiled warmly and told him exactly which ones I would like and we began to laugh as I guessed all of what he wanted correctly(my perception of people is high). It was kind of bizarre to me that this man that I had known for a while guessed the completely OPPOSITE of what I not only desired to eat but needed to maintain what God gave me. Luckily for us, God is not like this at all, when He searches our hearts desires He can tell not only if they are something we truly want as well as if they are something we need.
A lot of people think that if they just come up with some list and give it to God, He’ll slap His stamp of approval on it and just move on with other tasks. And, although, God does bless His people and can help us achieve our goals, He’s not to be used as a good luck charm, when things are not going our way, nor is He a Santa Clause whom we just give a list of requests to, expecting Him to fulfill our every want. God is a God.
God is God.
This means that YOU are NOT God and YOU have to submit to what it is that He wants for your life. A lot of people tend to get tripped up on this part about God. Sometimes YOU want to succeed at your goals and dreams so much, you lose sight of what God wants and end up losing yourself in the process. You can have everything that is considered great in the eyes of the world, but still feel empty, lost, and a bit confused. Maybe you even have direction, but you’re lacking what only God can give: True peace, true joy, and true security.
“If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?”
It’s time to stop listening to every preacher with a good ‘Word’ of blessing from the Lord, or even to yourself and start knowing who God is for yourself. When you start learning who God is for yourself and stop relying on everyone else’s point of view, you’ll learn that half of those desires in your heart that you think should be fulfilled are what God would call wicked desires. It doesn’t really matter if you feel like your goals are noble or good if God didn’t want those things to take place you moving forward would be you moving in disobedience.
“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires.”
Are you striving for goals that God never desired for you to accomplish? It’s true that when we delight ourselves in the Lord He will give us our heart’s desire. I’ve experienced this multiple times before, where I wouldn’t even pray for something, but God would fulfill my desire just because the time we spent together. The thing is when we are delighting ourselves in Him, we are spending time in His presence our desires become His desires, so why wouldn’t God fulfill them, if they are something He wants for us anyway?
Perhaps, you’re now wondering if your desires are even in alignment with God’s will for your life. To speak honestly, if you are Hell-bent on serving God, it doesn’t matter if your desires are not in His will, they will eventually reflect what He wants. I’ve had a couple of times where God and I were NOT on the same page as far as what He wanted to do in my life, but the more and more I spent time in His presence, the more and more my desires changed to suit what He wanted because when it comes down to it, a true servant of God always want what God wants no matter what’s at stake.
If you truly belong to God it does not matter if you’ve been stubborn in the past, it doesn’t matter if you think you know what you want BETTER than God, He will always be able to persuade you to His side. A lot of people say God is a ‘gentleman’, allowing us to make our own choices, and although, I agree He is gentle, He is best described as a very polite, PERSUASIVE, and PERSISTENT businessman. I’ve never seen God let anyone that is in the Kingdom of God do what they want over what He wants easily unless He knew that they will never come to Him or what they’re deciding won’t affect hardly anyone, including themselves. Just ask Jonah.
If you’ve ever taught kids or babysat, which I’ve done in the past, you know that sometimes when you suggest they do an activity that will be good for everyone, such as cleaning, a lot of them might be tough to convince. They think their desire is just to pick up the toys in the toy room and play games. However, they do not realize that they need to clean the playroom so that no one will get hurt in the process of playing and that they can have as much space as they want to play for a long time.
God sees us the same way, sometimes our desires require us to do tasks and things that we don’t want to get to our goals. God desires to do some cleaning in your heart; you desire to get a promotion, degree, or house. Little do you know both are the same desire. Some children are convinced easily, but others take extra nudging to get them to go along with what you’re saying. Either way, both will receive their heart’s desire when they submit to God. God wants to give you good things, but it’s up to you to be submissive enough to follow the leading of the Spirit when he commands you to move.
“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”
