The Prideful and The Prejudiced

Prideful

A lot of people say don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but how many people actually listen to this statement? Even in the Bible, God does not judge a person based on what man can see, but instead what He sees in the spiritual. However, I often see people in the Christian community, especially, judging and turning their nose up to people they feel are a certain way. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been down this path before. We’ve all gotten to a place where we judged someone without knowing them too well or made a hasty decision on whether or not to associate with a person because of their past or things they have said or done. Sometimes your decision to stay near a person was purely based on what a person could or could not do for you. The question you need to ask yourself is: Who are you?

Who are you to make the call of who God links and connects you with and who He doesn’t link you with? Who are you to toss a person aside as if they are a used toothpick because you don’t think they can bring you to a new level? And, get this, why is all of this about you and what that person can do for you anyway? My brothers and sisters, we need to do better. The last time I checked the Bible it said that we ought to think of others more highly than ourselves. The word says that we are to be cheerful givers and not giving just to get something in return. However, the problem still persists of believers who are only doing things for their own selfish desires and to fulfill what they want God’s plans to be for themselves.

“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross”

Phillipians 2:3-8(NASB)

Are you so caught up in pride that you cannot submit to God’s leading? It has to always be about you—let’s throw giving your life as a living sacrifice out the window then. You cannot dare to be seen with this person for whatever reason. So, now you feel like they’re beneath you? Or maybe it’s just that they won’t give you what you want. I say to you today, I’ve seen this time and time again and in most of these cases, the very person that these prideful and pretentious kind of people needed were always there for them at the right times and were beckoned by God back into their lives again. In most cases the person God is trying to link you up with, whether you like them or not may very well have the exact connections you need to do whatever it is you’ve asked God to do, but you’re too busy running the show. God is telling you to stay at that job, with that person He’s linked you with, or at that same-old-same-old church or city you’re in long enough for Him to work in your life, but you refuse to listen! Sometimes your perception of a person or a place is completely wrong, but you prejudged them so much that you never gave them the chance and now you’ve ended up shutting a door that God opened just to bless you.

“ Peter talked with him, he went inside and found many people gathered together. He said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with a foreigner or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.

Acts10:27-28

The last time I checked me and all of heaven did not get the memo that you were more all-knowing than God and that you had clearance to break bonds that He clearly formed, not only for your good but the other person’s good. And so what if a person cannot help you do what it is that you want? If the relationship is not abusive or hindering your walk with God, who are we to tell God that we don’t want to be the person that helps pour into another person? When you are a Christian sometimes God will need you to pour into other people what you know so that person might be helped and it will have nothing to do with what you feel like doing. Stop being selfish and start walking in who God has called you to be.
