The Purpose Series | Who Are You? :: Learning Your Identity in Christ
If you saw a person who was utterly confident, unwavering in their beliefs, and capable of succeeding at everything they set their mind to do, would you think that they had no idea who they were? Most likely the answer is no. It’s very rare for a person to have these qualities without having a strong sense of self. Knowing who you are and whose you are can not only help you to find your purpose, but can actually lead you to succeed in more areas of your life than normal. Maybe you’re in a place where you don’t understand why you could never succeed at anything. Maybe you’re wondering why you aren’t where you want to be in life. The answer has a lot to do with the fact that you have no idea who you are, who you belong to, and therefore have no idea what the purpose and plan is for your life. In short, you have no direction at all and without direction you will never move to the place where you want to end up at in life.

So, you’ve found ‘The One’! The guy that makes your heart flutter, makes you skip a bit, or makes you sing. Well, maybe he doesn’t do all that for you, but something has whispered in your ear: ‘He’s the ONE!’ Maybe your excited about it or maybe your ready to run for the hills. Either way you need to discern whether or not this word came from God or the devil because if you don’t know this by now, Satan can and will speak to you every now and again to throw you off track. Kiss the girl

Graceful, poised, a bit sassy, and always sharply dressed. When she looks up at you and smiles, the whole earth seems to stand still. You want this girl. You feel like you need to have her, but every time you’ve tried to approach a girl you’ve wanted in the past it seems to have failed. This one is not only the prettiest, but also one of the smartest women you’ve known. She’s well out of your league, there’s no way she would give you the time of day, but the Holy Spirit has prompted you within your heart to pursue her. You gulp a bit nervous about what to do in this situation. What to do, what to do? Bad Bosses
You’re warm and cozy in your bed getting the best sleep of your life, when a trickle of sunlight pierces through your window and touches your eye. Grudgingly you open your eyes to the painful bright light of morning, look at your calendar, and let out a big sigh. It’s Monday morning and we all know what that means, it’s time to go to work with that horrible boss you work for! She nags you and picks apart every little thing that you do without even so much as a thank you for the good you have done. She talks about you with the others behind your back. She demeans and humiliates you in front of others to make it seem as though you’re not smart enough to do your own job, which actually makes her look dumb, in your eyes, since she hired you! You could leave the job, but you find rewarding things about other aspects of your work or you just need the money. Either way, the Sunday sermon certainly didn’t help by reinforcing the concept that you have to submit to that witch!
Name Dropping
Life is about who you know, right? People get special treatment, special privileges and even specific jobs because they know people who work there or operate in circles that are higher in the totem pole. Sometimes even becoming enemies with the wrong people can put you in a bad place in certain circles. This is why some people in society will find themselves name dropping. They’ll let certain names of people come into their mouths so that they can gain access to places that they would never have access to before.
What saddens me is that I see people in the church doing this. If they find out that you’re someone special in a certain circle or spot in life they’ll mention your name just so they can get access. Even in jobs, people will try to pretend as though they know someone who you know just so they can get close to you because they feel as though you have something they can use. I can’t help but to laugh at all these things when I see this, especially in Christians because we don’t realize that we have the most important name of all that should always be on our tongues: Jesus.
